New Thai Movie release Attack 13 is a refreshingly direct teen horror that serves up a fun helping of throwback thrills. The film, directed by Taweewat Wantha, is thankfully free of the knowing cynicism that has undercut so many mainstream American teen horrors as of late (last year’s Tarot was an especially irony-poisoned eye-roller).
The story here revolves around a girls’ school volleyball team in a small town. The team captain, Bussaba (Nichapalak Thongkham), is a nasty bully: she extorts money from her teammates, physically assaults them, and nearly traffics one into prostitution. No surprise then, that when she loses her academic quota (and by extension, her potential future) and commits suicide by hanging from the gym’s basketball net, she is not greatly missed. However, at least one person mourns her passing: a sinister black magic rite is performed to resurrect the bully. As the immortal line from Pet Sematary runs, “sometimes dead is better”.

What follows is a surprisingly hard-edged and merciless chiller in which no character is safe. Writer Thammanan Chulaboriruk crafts a number of energetic set pieces that exploit the gym setting to its utmost, particularly in a practice session interrupted by Bussaba’s ghost (the effects behind this jump-scare are charmingly reminiscent of sixties ghost films). These spooky passages are directed with panache by Wantha, whose camerawork is impressively nimble. Long takes are employed sparingly, but excellently, and are always in service to the narrative and emotional stakes of any given moment.
Attack 13 moves fast and is paced and edited propulsively. A sustained sense of urgency underlines every scene, by way of a shaman’s explanation that Bussaba’s spirit will be sated once three full days have passed. This gives the film a thrilling deadline, toward which it sprints. Sadly, this narrative momentum occurs at the expense of several plot threads, which are left unresolved by the time the credits roll.
Attack 13 Is a Merciless Chiller
The finale still remains darkly effective, however, with a series of twists that recontextualize preceding events. Chulaboriruk and Wantha are careful to create a bully who is at once monstrous and still somewhat pitiful – Bussaba is failed by every adult in the film – but her nastiness presides. This early lack of empathy for Bussaba is allowed to fester into something truly rotten at the climax. The film’s coda is a gnarly, conflicting scene that should delight genre fans.
Although the film’s hectic runtime leaves the supporting cast underdeveloped, the young performers all make their mark. Veerinsara Tangkitsuvanich is the standout, impressing as Hong, one of Bussaba’s favourite victims. Her sensitivity and uncanny intelligence make her a compelling side character of surprising complexity.
Great gore effects, well-executed jump-scares, and a talented cast and crew make Attack 13 a winner for this Halloween season.
